IWC - A knockout watch
The Muhammad Ali edition watch presented at the IWC flagship boutique in New Yorkby Henry Neuteboom
We've seen diving watches, flying watches, sailing watches, could the next thing be a boxing watch? Of course not, but IWC have just presented a limited edition watch dedicated to Muhammad Ali. The watch itself is the brand's Big Pilot's Watch, based on the legendary 1940 model. It is distinctive for the clarity of the dial, which is matt black, with an arrowhead index at 12 o'clock. Numbers are bold and luminescent, likewise the hands, so that you can read the time at any time of day or night. The red touches are a reference to Muhammad Ali, who often wore red boxing gloves for his fights. The inside of the black alligator strap is also red. The guy himself said, "I am already a proud owner of this beautiful timepiece. And, as a watch lover, I am very happy that IWC’s social commitment honors this limited edition." In fact, part of the proceeds from sales will be donated to The Greatest's foundation, the Muhammad Ali Center.
Muhammad was represented by his daughter Miya at the opening of the IWC flagship store on 5th avenue, for which the Muhammad Ali limited edition of 250 pieces has been reserved as an exclusive. Guests at the opening event on 25 April 2012 included actor Matthew Fox, model Adriana Lima, former boxing heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield, and boxing legend Larry Holmes, as well as many others.
The watch is sold in a package that comes complete with a book, "GOAT - Greatest of All Time," which is 20 x 20 inches in size and weighs 75 pounds! It has over 3,000 images by photographs and artists, and it celebrates the life of Ali. Given its massive weight, you could either read it, or use it to train for your own big match!
