English Pear & Freesia, new curiosity perfume by Jo Malone
The maison's signature simplicity makes this one of the top perfumes of all timeBy Henry Neuteboom
Jo Malone has presented a new fragrance in its perfumes kingdom featuring the autumnal nuances of ripe pear and the delicate blossom of freesia. It is available in 30 and 100 ml cologne formats, while from November, it will also be launched in Body Crème, Body & Hand Wash, and Home Candle versions.
Autumn is a season that never fails to inspire memories amongst those familiar with the British isles, with its long sunny evenings, apples and pears ripening in the orchards, late flowers in the garden, and the changing colours of the trees.
John Keats Ode to Autumn is one of his most famous poems, and it begins:
Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core; …
English Pear & Freesia was created by Christine Nagel, who is universally admired in the perfumes business for her superb floral fragrances and her experimental compositions. As she herself said, using the fragrance of mature pear - in this case the variety King William - is rather unusual for a perfume, but it does express autumn remarkably effectively. She has tried to evoke the scent of a pear picked at its perfect ripeness, with all its sensorial complexity. in fact a pear has a relatively hard skin, that conceals the soft, juicy flesh, and it is this duality that Christine has brilliantly succeeded in suggesting.
The perfume is given an evocative and complex character by other ingredients, including apple, the delicate freshness of white freesia, dogrose, patchouli, amber and white musk, the latter giving a warm backdrop to the highlights. An unusual olfactory feature is offered by the sharp, fresh tang of green rhubarb.
Jo Malone is one of the most innovative perfume houses in the world. The company opened its first boutique in Walton Street, London, in 1994, followed by a flagship in Sloane Street, London, in 1999. Today, it is present in twenty-two countries world-wide. It recently opened a boutique in Via del Babuino, Rome, which joins the two boutiques in Milan. The company's approach is that of simplicity, echoing Leonardo da Vinci's conviction that "Simplicity is the height of refinement."
Christine Nagel, of Swiss-Italian origins, has brought her talent to the maison, joining Jo Malone in 2009 and sharing the marque's preference for simplicity and minimalism.
