Sumahan On The Water

A spectacular 19-century jewel on the Bosphorus

Sumahan is a hotel located on that legendary location between two continents, on the Bosphorus Strait separating Europe from Asia. The building was originally a distillery dating back to the mid-19th century, making "raki," the traditional Ottoman spirit. It is unique both for its position and for the fact that it has remained under the ownership of the original families. The Turkish-American owner-architects Nedret and Mark Butler transformed the derelict factory into a luxury resort, ideal for visitors looking for a memorable stay in the city.
In Istanbul, status is determined not by the power of your car, but by the view that you have from your living room. Every room in the hotel offers a mesmerizing seascape view, punctuated by fishing boats, ships and ferries, day and night. The hotel is close to the Cengelkoy district, itself rather an exception in the modern city, because it is basically a village comprising timber houses, fish restaurants and seaside promenades.

Accommodation all shares the common denominator of superb views. Twin-level suites have their own Bosphorus-side garden. Furnishings are contemporary, and many rooms have their own Turkish-style bath or hammam. The hotel's style of hospitality is based on comprehensive and efficient service, from tea, coffee and snacks at any time at day or night, through to internet access in all rooms. The Waterfront Terrace Restaurant serves lunch, dinner and beverages, with a sea-side terrace. The Kordon à la carte restaurant features seafood and Mediterranean cuisine. There are also wellness (hammam, massage and exercise) and meeting facilities. All considered, you can be sure that you will leave the hotel feeling far better than you did when you arrived, and with the memory of having experienced something absolutely unique.
