Restaurant HIX at The Albemarle

Looking for a bite to eat before the theatre? In the heart of Mayfair, HIX at The Albemarle serves breakfast, lunch, pre-theatre and dinner. You don’t get more English than this with all ingredients sourced from the British Isles and menu choices featuring British classics such as Brown’s signature fish and chips. The highlight is the carving trolley, taken around every lunch, changing day-to-day. On Thursdays enjoy the roasted Huntsham Farm middlewhite pork or go on a Sunday for roasted rib of Hereford beef with Yorkshire pudding. Wash this down with a selection from their 400+ wine list.

The English Tearoom
Drink in peerless literary prowess at The English Tea Room, justly famous for its extravagant afternoon teas and enjoyed by the literati extraordinaire. Its 1837 founder, James Brown, was Lord Byron’s valet, his wife Lady Byron’s maid. Rudyard Kipling wrote ‘The Jungle Book’ amid the building’s walls, and Agatha Christie selected this honeyed tearoom for her afternoon sojourns. Indeed, the hotel in which it sits provided untold inspiration to Christie (the doyenne of the murder mystery who would have turned 120 this year) and is the prototype for Bertram’s Hotel. Hercule Poirot might have chosen the Victoria Sponge from the cake trolley and Miss Marple could have plumped for the miniature Battenbergs from the tiered cake stand, alongside award-wining fruit scones with clotted cream and strawberry preserve. Seasonal education comes in the form of Christmas ‘Tea-torials’ but whatever the weather, a cosseted afternoon in the English Tea Room is always an education.
