Murano Glass

Murano, Venice

Murano glass

The island of Murano, just north of Venice, has been producing glass for centuries. The creations today, as a thousand years ago, are renowned for their delicate beauty, and the intricate processes involved in their creation. Visitors flock to the island to purchase pieces of the beautiful glass, or to watch the glassmakers at work. What was once a highly guarded and secret skill, is today quite out in the open, with artisans happy to share their work with the public. Glass shops abound in both Murano, and Venice, and quality can greatly vary. Laguna Murano Glass Factory, across the bridge from Piazza San Marco, is one of the oldest glass workshops in Venice and offers a wonderful selection of antique-style glassware. The beautiful showroom and shop at Murano Collezioni offers modern and classic creations from prestigious glass makers, such as Barovier & Toso, and Venini and Carlo Moretti.  Bruno Amadi crafts beautiful glass objects, in the shapes of mosquitoes, dragonflies, starfish and other animals.
