Bur Dubai, Dubai

Step back in time and catch a glimpse of Old Dubai in this district, with its markets, courtyard houses and wind towers. The latter were the only way of cooling houses in the days before electricity, fans and aircon. The district also has many museums and local artists, as well as restaurants and markets. The buildings - still under renovation - include Al Fahidi Fort, the oldest building in Dubai (about 1780), and the Heritage Village. Other interesting venues are the remains of the old city wall, Dubai Museum near Al Fahidi Fort, Majlis Gallery, and the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (+971 4 353 6666, www.cultures.ae, email smccu@emirates.net.ae), which provides information about U.A.E. culture and tradition.
