Bilbao is the major city and principal industrial centre of Spain's Basque country. It has a fine mediaeval old centre, with the lovely Basilica de Santiago, and many museums, including Museo de Bellas Artes, Palacio de la Música, and above all the world-famous Guggenheim Museum designed by Frank Gehry that has done so much to increase the city's renown. Other recent developments include Zubizuri Bridge by Santiago Calatrava, and a metro system designed by Norman Foster. Today the city offers luxury boutiques on the Gran Vía, newly refurbished riverfront districts, and the fascination of the Old Town, with its Gothic churches, beautiful plazas, and some of Spain's finest cuisine.
