Berlin is superbly varied, with classical architecture and the Museum Island, some of the finest contemporary architecture in Europe, a glittering nightlife scene, and a lot of extraordinary history, such as Checkpoint Charlie and the Bundestag. The Berlin Zoo is fascinating, and the Tiergarten is a huge central park. The Philharmonie is home to the Berlin Philharmonic, one of the best orchestras in the world. There are many clubs, particularly around Alexanderplatz, Potsdamer Platz and Charlottenburg. Two important shopping streets are Friedrichstrasse and Kurfürstendamm (Ku'damm), and there are some exceptional department stores.
