Florence's Hidden Treasures and Some

Three ideas for things to do in Florence beyond the obvious.

Museo degli Innocenti

On February 5, 1445, Agata Smeralda became the first baby welcomed into the world’s oldest known orphanage, the Ospedale degli Innocenti, famous for its design by Brunelleschi. The brand new museum displays for the first time 140 mementoes left by mothers in hopes of reuniting with their little ones, which they would leave anonymously on the turnstile still indicated at the left end of the porch. Occupying 3 floors, the entire space is devoted to the art, architecture and history of ‘the innocents’.

After the runaway success of his first shop on Via de’ Neri, ‘slow coffee’ enthusiast Francesco Sanapo has opened a gorgeous new location in the heart of Florence’s left bank. Open all day and serving everything from gourmet sandwiches and hip cocktails to artisanal coffee, this trendy café/cocktail bar/bistro has a taste for every palate.

Basilica of Santa Croce

This year Santa Croce is at the epicentre of events to mark the flood that fifty years ago prompted ‘mud angels’ to come from around the world and help rescue precious artworks like the crucifix by Cimabue that adorned the refectory here. This Gothic art and architectural jewel is called the ‘Pantheon of the Italian Greats’ for all the famous men and women buried between its walls.
