On the shore of its namesake lake and with splendid views of the Bernese Alps, there are few Swiss cities as perfectly placed as Thun. And you’ll be even more impressed once you start exploring the medieval centre, with its double-decker high street and imposing castle. This is definitely a place to linger longer than a day out, maybe for a drink beside the crystal blue river or an evening cruise in a paddle-steamer on the lake. By the way, the H is silent so it’s pronounced ‘toon’.

Switzerland has its fair share of medieval castles but few are more impressive than the one in Thun. It dates from the 12th century but now houses an interesting local history museum.

Thun has another castle, one that’s about 700 years newer but just as beautiful. It’s Schloss Schadau, a Romantic flight of fancy built right on the lakeshore and now a top-notch restaurant. The dramatic interior décor takes a lot of beating but the terrace with its lakes-and-mountains backdrop manages to do just that. It is a heavenly place in summer.
